Opis
Camille Pissarro: Select Works from the Father of French ImpressionismOpis:Camille Pissarro - towering French legend of art. He studied and honed his craft with Gustave Courbet and Camille Corot. In 1873 he founded a society in which he mentored greats such as Georges Seurat, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Paul Cézanne, who called Pissarro “a father figure.” Pissarro was inspired by artists like Corot to paint outdoors and often deals with rural life. He was born on and spent much of his youth on the island of St. Thomas, now the U.
S. Virgin Islands. At 12, he was sent to Savary Academy, a boarding school near Paris, where fine art was a rigorous part of school life. He returned to St. Thomas at 17, where his father wanted him to work as a cargo clerk. He did, but he used every break he had to draw life on the island. Pissarro and his society of impressionists were forward-thinking and free-spirited. Their work serves as a window into 19th century life.
