Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 2 5Opis:Product Description BIS present a new recording of Jean Sibeliuss Symphonies 2 and 5 from the Minnesota Orchestra and their Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä. Beginning in the early 1990s, seminal recordings with Vänskä and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra of tone poems and the seven symphonies stood at the forefront of a new interpretative approach to the composers music. Vänskäs recordings of Sibelius over the past 20 years form the backbone of the labels newly completed Sibelius Edition. This disc with the Minnesota Orchestra follows an acclaimed cycle of Beethovens symphonies, and most recently a recording of Bruckners Fourth (Romantic) Symphony. The Sibelius expert Robert Layton presents the Second Symphony as the symphony by which many music lovers find their way to Sibelius, and quotes the composer in a comment about symphonic form: a river with innumerable tributaries feeding it before it broadens majestically and flows into the sea.

The sheer polish of the Minnesotans is a source of pleasure, *** --Financial Times 16/02/12Altogether, a fine start to what may be the benchmark cycle for the 21st Century. --Gramophone,Apr'12Vanska's new cycle begins woth two epic performances of the secons and the fifth, in state-of-the-art sound, with tempi in the second often a bit broader than before to the music's advantage, and some extra propulsion in the Fifth, particularly in the glorious finale, which sweeps you away, without ever sounding hectic or rushed.***** --Mail on Sunday,25/03/12Osmo Vanska's reputation as an interpreter of Sibelius on disc has already been recognised through the complete cycle of the seven symphonies he recorded with the Lathi Symphony Orchestra(BISCD1933/35). This new coupling of Nos 2 & 5 with his Minnesota Orchestra by no means overrides his earlier performances: while the controlled playing is well-controlled, the atmosphere of , say, the lst movement of No 2 is less haunting, with crags and chills elsewhere tending to be smoothed and softened. **** --Sunday Times, 25/03/12This disc reaffirms Vänskä as the most perceptive among living Sibelians by underlining these works adherence to the symphonic tradition while emphasizing the radical qualities making them essential to its continuation. How he further integrates such facets will be by no means the least notable aspect of this cycle as it unfolds. --International Record ReviewOsmo Vanska's reputation as an interpreter of Sibelius on disc has already been recognised through the complete cycle of the seven symphonies he recorded with the Lathi Symphony Orchestra(BISCD1933/35).
